Blockader crowd control barricades were a presence during the annual Fells Point Festival in Baltimore on October 3-4.

The popular restaurant and bar Shuckers of Fells Point rented 40 interlocking steel barricades for its outdoor Beer Garden during the festival. Approximately 250 feet of barricades were placed around the building, while the restaurant had personnel providing security at the open locations at which patrons could enter or exit the area.

In previous years, Shuckers had used poles and snow fencing around the Beer Garden area during the festival, but they switched to Blockader barriers for the 2009 event. The crowd control barricades established the boundaries of the area with more authority, said Andy Rosenthal, Shuckers of Fells Point Director of Marketing. Both the restaurant and the festival organizers were pleased with the performance of the barriers.

Sixty interlocking steel barriers were set up in a straight line inside the restaurant to direct patrons and keep the crowd away from the stage area. Approximately 500 attendees watched the taping of the “QVC Race Show” which was followed by a concert featuring country music star Blake Shelton.

Blockader barriers had also been utilized in the same manner during a similar QVC program taping at Whiskey River in March 2009.

This fall, Blockader crowd control barricades helped direct crowds and designate space at the debut of the Madison Square Market in New York’s City’s Madison Square Park.

Approximately 60 food and shopping booths were set up on the west side of the park from October 9 through November 1. Blockader interlocking steel barriers were set up in the approximately 5,000 foot food court area, and were used to separate the booths from the tables and chairs used by patrons, said Gregory Sanson, Operations Manager of Urban Space Management, and Manager of the Food Market.

The barriers were accessorized with jackets (vinyl covers which fit the barrier frame) which featured the logo of the Madison Square Market.

Blockader barriers are currently securing new construction work at the General Motors Detroit Hamtramck Assembly Plant. More than 300 interlocking steel barricades, comprising 2,200 linear feet, are set up around the perimeter of the construction project to direct pedestrians and workers away from new manufacturing equipment.

The crowd control barricades at the plant are the result of a long-term rental arrangement contracted between Blockader (a division of The Tamis Corporation) and Commercial Contracting Corporation (CCC), the Auburn Hills, Michigan-based construction contractor for the GM assembly plant project. Commercial Contracting, which has a long history of working with Blockader, rented 339 barriers for the work at the GM Detroit Hamtramck Assembly Plant. The rental is expected to last through the end of 2009, the projected completion date of the construction project, according to Dave Hurst, Executive Vice President, Installation Division at CCC.

As one of the nation’s leading wholesale suppliers to the event management industry, Blockader’s barriers were chosen by the general services contractor for the G20 Summit in Pittsburgh (September 24-25, 2009). Here, the crowd control barricades are lined up in front of historic Phipps Conservatory, where world leaders gathered for the event’s opening reception and dinner.

The G20 Summit in Pittsburgh, held September 24-25, was another in a series of major national event in which Blockader crowd control products were present.

Blockader continued to fulfill its role as a wholesale supplier to event management companies which oversee high-profile events. In this case, Blockader crowd control barricades were part of the product mix chosen by Hargrove, Inc., the general services contractor for the G20 Summit.

The most prominent and visible usage of Blockader barriers was at the event’s welcome reception and dinner hosted by President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama at Phipps Conservatory on September 24. The leaders of the G20 nations and their spouses met in a setting in which Blockader barriers provided and visually conveyed a sense of security and order. Blockader barriers were also used around the Andy Warhol Museum, where the first lady hosted a luncheon the following day.

Blockader maintains a long-standing relationship with Hargrove, which has managed numerous major events, including Pope Benedict XVI’s 2008 Mass in Washington, D.C, and the 2009 Presidential Inauguration. As one of the nation’s prominent suppliers to the event industry, Blockader’s crowd management products have been utilized at events such as parades, concerts, political rallies, and sporting events.

Blockader crowd control barricades have been a presence at NASCAR events for years, and nowhere is this more evident than at the Richmond International Raceway, home of two annual NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races. A long-standing relationship between Blockader and the Richmond track results in Blockader barriers being used in multiple locations at the raceway.

In the parking lots, barricades separate pedestrians from traffic, and serve as temporary fencing around special parking areas

In the track’s infield, interlocking steel barriers are a security tool, as they safely separate spectators from the race action

The raceway has concluded that barriers with flat bases are the best fit for its crowd management and security needs. “We had previously tried plastic fencing,” says Linwood Burrow, Richmond International’s Manager of Track Operations. “But Blockader barriers look better and provide better security. They help keep our fans happy. It’s an excellent product.” Richmond International Raceway (www.rir.com) is site of the “Crown Royal Presents the Your Name Here 400” in May and the “Chevy Rock & Roll 400” in September.

Blockader crowd control barricades have received almost-daily media exposure over the last few months, as a result of their use during presidential campaign events held by the Obama-Biden and McCain-Palin tickets. Blockader barriers have been used for crowd control at many campaign events, including Senator Barack Obama’s speech before a large crowd at Progress Plaza in Philadelphia on October 12 (see photo), and a number of Senator John McCain’s campaign rallies.

For decades, Blockader has been the top supplier of crowd control barricades used at public events held by candidates of all political parties, during both the primaries and the general election campaign. The interlocking steel barriers have been purchased or rented by campaign rally organizers or sites to provide “borders” around campaign stages (particularly at outdoor events) or to block off and secure special areas for the media or VIPs. They are also often used as a barrier to separate the candidates from spectators in what have traditionally been called “rope lines.”

“Rope lines are a staple of political events, but rarely include a rope or a line,” according to a recent New York Times article. “The rope is usually a metal barrier, and the line is more of a scrum of people pushing toward the candidate.”

In past years, Blockader crowd control barricades have been used at both the Republican and Democratic national conventions, and at the last four inaugural parades in Washington, D.C.

Blockader is a wholesale supplier to local events or companies which need to access crowd control equipment, sometimes on very short notice. These local companies have turned to Blockader for over 25 years because they are assured of reliable service and high quality products which will be effective at providing crowd management even at large events.
